First day as an intern for Floriography Flowers
After a 14 hour drive from Houston, TX to Albuquerque, NM my dad and I arrived at Floriography Flower's warehouse. As an event planner, the warehouse was a dream come true. Mrs. Emily, my boss, and the owner and founder of Floriography Flowers, welcomed us and showed us around the space that they co-lease with a wedding planner. Flowers, event planning props, decorations and lights overflowed the room leaving my imagination running of what events I would be planning this summer.
My first lesson as an intern in an event planning business was that you do not get weekends off. My day started at 6:00 am to arrive at the warehouse to gather all flowers and supplies for the Nomadic Yoga Festival in Albuquerque The Yards to run a booth. The Yards had a beautiful industrial feel and was an incredible event venue that set the relaxed, positive and uplifting mood. Mrs. Emily and I set up the booth as soon as we arrived. On one table, cactus and succulents were displayed, and the second table had DIY flower pots where customers could select their own vase and then fill the vase with as many flowers of their choosing for $10. We also had a flower crown making station.
Today I mainly learned about flowers and practiced my customer service experience. I also had many conversations with Mrs. Emily about how she started the business from a small loan, working out of her laundry room, overcoming failure and Facebook marketing into the business she has today. The most fascinating plant I saw today was an Air Plant. The most interesting thing about Air Plants is how to care for them. Once a week, Floriography submerge the Air Plant in water for 30 minutes and keep it in a damp area. Mrs. Emily told customers a common location for the Air Plants is a restroom. I also learned how to make a flower crown, which proved much more difficult than I could have imagined. I am writing a separate blog on a "how to make a flower crown" tomorrow.
I am beyond excited to embark on this internship and traveling adventure and look forward to everything I will learn.
